Welcome to the 2012 BC Library Conference!

The 2012 BC Library Conference theme, “Licence to Read” means many things in our current context. Most obviously, it refers to libraries' roles in providing our constituents with access to electronic materials, both by paying for that privilege and by advocating for open access. But it also has more subtle dimensions – libraries have an important role in supporting the learning of reading, both text and the new electronic environment – and in acting as a force for change in ensuring that information is not hidden from public view. It encompasses the provision of the technology and tools needed for access to information. The 2012 theme thus encourages us to engage enthusiastically with our community and commit to better the world through librarianship.
