T1: Engage and Connect with Magic, Storytelling and Improv

Session summary:
Librarians are interactive experts. This workshop will tap in to the skills and experience that librarians possess with message-based magic, interactive storytelling and improv. Participants will come away with 10 ready-to-use, simple magic effects; 3 storytelling activities and 3 improv exercises. Learn more about the hook, hot spice, wizbangers and learning jolts. Turn a misdirection into a positive tool. Ssshhh – you will learn some secrets of the magicians (we may have to ask you to sign a blood oath). Ken’s mantra is “let us bore no more.” He guarantees that you will not be bored. Join us as we play and learn. We have infiltrated your ranks. Little did you know that there are magicians among you, and 2 of them will join me in this hands-on workshop.
What participants will learn: At the end of the sessions, participants will be able to perform and apply 5 easy-to-master magic effects, 4 interactive storytelling techniques and 3 improv theatre activities. They will also be able to add some “hot spice” to meetings, presentations and teaching.
Audience: Anyone who presents, teaches and interacts with various populations.
Speakers: Ken Bellemare, President & Facilitator of Learning, Communication Magic kbellemare@shaw.ca Ken Bellemare is the founder and president of Communication Magic, a Vancouver, BC-based training company. He is dedicated to helping trainers, teachers, speakers and those in the helping professions create better learning atmospheres to enhance learning and communication for adults and children. To achieve this, he uses message-based magic, storytelling, improvisation and action-based experiential activities. Ken is a frequent conference presenter and instructor/trainer at VCC and UVic, and recently returned from a teaching assignment in the Kingdom of Bahrain. His motto is “Let us bore no more,” and his book, Wizbangers – 101 Quick, Action-Based Learning Activities for Speakers, Trainers and Teachers, is used by professionals who believe that we learn best by engaging all the senses.
Ana Rosa Blue, Assistant Librarian, WorkSafeBC anarosa.blue@worksafebc.com Ana Rosa Blue holds a Master of Library Science degree from UBC. For nearly 20 years, she has enjoyed working in a variety of libraries, including WorkSafeBC, BCIT, Vancouver Public Library, Vancouver Coastal Health, Lions Gate Hospital, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, Canadian Venture Exchange and the BC Courthouse Library. Ana Rosa is also a court and health care Spanish-language interpreter, and is presently finishing up coursework for her Provincial Instructor Diploma. Ana Rosa and Jane Curry are thrilled to be assistant conjurers for Ken Bellemare’s special session on magic. Ana Rosa and Jane will later team up again to present Consumer Health Resources to conference delegates.
Jane Curry, Head, Outreach Branch,Vancouver Public Libary jane.curry@vpl.ca Jane Curry is a UBC SLAIS graduate and has worked as a librarian at the Vancouver Public Library for more than 19 years. Her varied public library experience includes being a children’s librarian (Joe Fortes Branch), reference librarian (History and Government Division) and Branch Head (Marpole Library), as well as acting assignments as Head of Fraserview, Hastings, Firehall, Kitsilano, Renfrew and Special Collections. Jane is currently the Head of Outreach Services (Homebound and Talking Books). First and foremost, Jane is a frontline librarian who is passionate about providing excellent reference, readers’ advisory and literacy services to all users. Jane is also committed to continuing education and instruction, and is in the process of completing the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program at VCC.

Session summary:
TOP is a comprehensive look at the roles and responsibilities of library trustees in British Columbia. Participants will be introduced to the provincial context for public library leadership, including legislation and services, community advocacy, current issues and strategies for success. Light breakfast at 9:00 a.m., lunch, and all materials will be provided.

T3: Speak Up! Public Speaking for Libraries
Session summary:
Learn about public speaking for libraries in a session that is fun, friendly and not intimidating (as public speaking often can be). Michelle Mallette and Sarah Felkar will discuss how public speaking is often an important part of working in a library.
What participants will learn: Participants will learn tips and tricks for preparing for public speaking and methods for overcoming public speaking anxiety. There will be opportunities to practice public speaking in front of an audience.

Speakers: Sarah Felkar, Library Assistant, West Vancouver Memorial Library sfelkar@westvanlibrary.ca Sarah Felkar graduated from Langara College’s Library and Information Technology Program after completing a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She has taught computer literacy classes at West Vancouver Memorial Library for the past year as part of her position as the Library Assistant for the library’s Community Computer Centre. She is currently part of BCLA’s Library Technicians’ and Assistants’ Interest Group, acting as the chief blogger.
Michelle Mallette, Student Services Coordinator, UBC School of Library, Archival and Information Studies. michelle.mallette@ubc.ca Michelle Mallette worked for 10 years as a community journalist before returning to university to complete a Bachelor of Arts in History, followed by her Master of Library and Information Studies. She worked as a youth services librarian for 5 years with Surrey Public Library, where she regularly spoke to groups as part of her work, presenting to groups as varied as elementary school classes, parents learning early literacy skills and daycare professionals. She currently works at UBC’s School of Library, Archival and Information Studies. She last presented at the BCLA conference in 2006.

T4: Richard Wagamese: Performance Storytelling

This session will be held at the En’owkin Centre, on the Penticton Indian Reserve. Lunch is not included.
Session summary: A 90-minute mix of theater and humour, coupled with traditional and contemporary storytelling that details why storytelling is so vital to the health and well being of our communities, homes, organizations and schools. A panel discussion will follow the presentation. Come and be part of a lively exchange about the importance of storytelling, and stories. (Panel TBA)
Speaker: Richard Wagamese is one of Canada's foremost Native authors and storytellers. Working as a professional writer since 1979 he's been a newspaper columnist and reporter, radio and television broadcaster and producer, documentary producer and the author of seven titles from major Canadian publishers with two new works waiting in the wings. He also works simultaneously in newspaper, radio and television.

T5: RDA. Game On!
Session summary:
Are you ready to shelve AACR2 practices at your library? Should you be? Three technical services professionals will lead this half-day workshop on implementing RDA. Offering real linkages between operations and updates to the cataloguing standards, this session will provide a practical overview of rule and process changes, along with an opportunity to view the RDA software online. This is an urgent update after a long wait for the latest international standards.
What participants will learn: This pre-conference session will offer cataloguers (and anyone else who is interested) an opportunity to focus on today’s cataloguing needs and practices.

T6: How to Quantify the Return on Investment of Library Technology Projects
Session summary:
How does one know if a new library technology will, as a vendor claims, enhance productivity and save the organization time and money? This presentation will provide a proven 10-step process for forecasting the return on investment of library technology projects and reducing subjectivity in the decision making process. This process enables senior library staff to make informed business decisions based on sound investing practices, while reducing the risk and enhancing the long-term security of the library. The presentation runs through the 10 steps of the process using examples and anecdotes from various public and academic library RFID, self-check and sortation projects:

Review internal and external factors that could influence the project.

T8: Leave Time for Fun: Using Project Management to Make Work Easier
Session summary:
Learn the most important tools of project management and how you can apply them in your job. Applying these techniques will help you make better choices about projects, plan how you and your team spend time and learn when to say no. Examples will focus on developing programs and services at the library, including how we use project management at VPL for children’s programs, Storyteller-in-Residence and Web development, and demonstrating how these tools are widely relevant at the library.
What participants will learn: Topics covered will focus on project planning, including defining scope, developing a timeline, estimating, budgeting and basic risk management. We’ll also cover communication and reporting. Recipients will learn how to apply these tools in their jobs and receive simple templates to get started using project management. A recent survey of new librarians identified project management as the single most needed skill for their first 5 years. This session is appropriate for anyone who manages projects and needs help planning, but hasn’t taken a project management course.

Speaker: Christina de Castell, Acting Manager, Online Information & News, Vancouver Public Library christina.decastell@vpl.ca Christina has managed projects ranging from Web implementations to delivering library programs. She is responsible for coordinating project managers at VPL for externally funded projects, and currently manages the Online Information & News Division, which includes the library’s Web services. Christina’s positions have included Manager, InfoAction at VPL, as well as Web Content Strategist and Information Specialist at the BC Securities Commission. She has used project management techniques in every job she has undertaken, and seen the range of ways in which they can be applied.
